You don’t NEED a permit to carry in AK but you want one because…
- Alaskans Travel. Your constitutional right to protect you and your family should not stop at the border. In order live a lifestyle of self sufficiency one must cultivate certain habits. Being in a less familiar place is all the more reason to be armed and aware. I know the neighborhoods in my home state that a prudent person should not travel alone at night. (Thick brush in bear country) However, on a trip outside Alaska I might not have this critical local knowledge.
- A CCW gives you a degree of legal protection. Part of my CCW classes MUST be taught by a Lawyer or Law Enforcement Officer. Having State laws regarding use of deadly force taught to you by a professional and having that documentation is a huge safety net for you as a citizen. Even if you never carry a firearm outside your home for protection, this document proves that you are a law abiding gun owner with the foresight and responsibility to acquire training in firearms handling and the legalities of self defense. This class will also discuss options for Self Defense Insurance and designating Power of Attorney for dealing with the aftermath of an emergency.
- The rules may change very soon. Get it while you can. A push for greater reciprocity in the States’ concealed carry requirements is already drafted and being presented in Congress. While this may make it more streamlined for you- the legal gun owner, it will certainly create pushback by States who very much do not want you to carry.(CA, HI) The logical result may be a nationally recognized curriculum for CCW, and it is likely to be far more stringent than a two day class and a 75 dollar processing fee. All politics aside you owe it to yourself to secure your freedoms even if it is a hassle in the short term. I will do my best to keep you legally armed in as many states as possible, especially as changes develop on this subject. In light of recent headlines, traveling with a firearm may become more difficult, having this document can only help.
- No more background checks. By simply completing one extra form with your CCW application, your permit will come with a NICS exempt endorsement. This means that anyone who sells you a firearm has no legal need to make that long call to FBI/ATF. This translates to less wait time and less fees. For you, the legal gun owner, picking up a new firearm should be as easy as buying a dozen eggs. Now it is.
